Fallout 4 Is Getting a Free Next-Gen Update in 2023

Bethesda announced that Fallout 4 will be receiving a free next-gen update at some point in 2023.

The 2015 action role-playing game has seen releases across Windows, PS4, and Xbox One, but is being tweaked for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and Windows to support the latest hardware features. The update will include a performance mode allowing for high frame rates and “quality features” for a better visual experience when playing in 4K.

News of the update came as part of a blog post(Opens in a new window) where Bethesda announced the conclusion of its Fallout 25th anniversary celebration. And as it’s a free update, you should automatically qualify to download it if you own a previous copy of the game on another platform. So the PS4 version will get a free PS5 update, the Xbox One version will get an Xbox Series update, and on Windows it will just be another update (e.g. on Steam) that hopefully your gaming system can cope with.

Fallout 4 has sold around 13.5 million copies(Opens in a new window), so there’s a lot of gamers out there who will qualify for this free update next year. And with Fallout 5 still a long way off, giving everyone an excuse to revisit Fallout 4 with a fresh coat of paint applied should help bridge the gap while reminding us why we enjoy the Fallout games so much.
