Kids who play video games score higher on brain function tests

Kids who play video games have better memory and better control over their motor skills than kids who don’t, according to a new study looking at adolescent brain function.

Video games might not be responsible for those differences — the study can’t say what the causes are — but the findings add to a bigger body of work showing gamers have better performance on some tests of brain function. That lends support to efforts to develop games that can treat cognitive problems.

“This study adds to our growing understanding of the associations between playing video games and brain development,” said Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, in a statement.

The study used data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, which launched in 2018 and is tracking brain development in thousands of children in the United States as they grow into adulthood. Participants periodically go

What Is DPI? the Stat That Your Computer Mouse’s Speed

  • DPI stands for “Dots Per Inch,” and it determines how quickly your mouse cursor moves across the screen when you move your mouse.
  • The higher your mouse’s DPI, the faster the cursor moves, meaning you’ll have to move your hand less to bring your cursor across the screen.
  • Different mice have different DPI counts, with gaming mice that possess counts from 6,000 to 20,000 DPI.

You’ve probably had the experience of using a new computer, and realizing that the mouse cursor on-screen moves slower or faster than you’re used to. It’s just a mouse, a standard piece of technology — how could different mice move so differently?

Whenever you move your mouse, a signal is sent to your computer and converted into on-screen cursor movement. This signal is different depending on your mouse’s “Dots Per Inch” — or DPI. And if you want a good mouse, DPI is one of

Logitech M720 Triathlon

The Triathlon is comfortable for a wide range of hand sizes, and it has six programmable buttons and long battery life.

Buying Options

*At the time of publishing, the price was $30.

Connection type: Bluetooth and wireless USB dongle

The Logitech M720 Triathlon can pair with, and quickly switch between, three devices via Bluetooth, or you can connect it via the included USB dongle. It also has six buttons that you can customize using Logitech’s Options software and a scroll wheel that toggles between ratcheted and smooth scrolling. And its single AA battery should last for two years, according to Logitech. But the Triathlon is contoured for right-handed mouse users—so it’s not ideal for lefties—and it doesn’t work on glass or mirrored surfaces.

Lansingburgh boosts after-school programing

Learning doesn’t stop when the school bell rings at the end of the day. But districts across the country are struggling with the same problem — how do you provide after-school programming, on a budget?

Some districts, like the Lansingburgh Central School District, have found their answer in 21st Century grant funding provided by the federal government.

The grant provides $400,000 each year for five years. That has enabled Lansingburgh to offer afterschool programming for more than 70 students.

Antonio Abitabile, the superintendent of the Lansingburgh Central School District, believes the funding will also help keep students out of trouble.

“One of the things that it will do for us is provide a safer environment after school. As we know, kids are always looking for things to do after school,” says Abitabile.

Photography is one of the electives students can now participate in thanks to the grant funding. For many

Danville business owner teaches computer skills to those released from prison

Steve Barrow opened his computer repair and sales business on Franklin Turnpike nearly two years ago. But soon after starting up, he saw a need for teaching basic computer skills to those recently released from prison.

Barrow offers free one-on-one computer training at his store, Hammer Hill Computers, to help returning residents reenter society. Those who have been in jail or prison, especially after a lengthy sentence, will likely have trouble operating computers and navigating the Internet, Barrow said.

“If you’ve been in prison for 20 years, you’re not going to know Google,” he said during an interview at his business last week.

Barrow does not ask what his clients served time for. That’s beside the point.

“I don’t ask what they went in for,” he said. “It’s not my business.”

How to troubleshoot your computer peripherals

No matter how well you look after your computer, something is going to eventually go wrong. And the issue won’t always be the machine itself, but maybe something you’ve plugged into it.

Peripherals (mice, keyboards, gamepads, webcams, and printers) can sometimes be a pain—they might either stop working or cause problems with the hardware and the software on your computer.

But before you make a (potentially expensive) call to a tech support professional, try troubleshooting your gadget problem yourself. There are certain steps that can be helpful in all scenarios, and that may well get your hardware working properly again.

Do some testing

Before you troubleshoot any tech problem, you need to know exactly where the problem is. The best way to do this is to test your peripheral in another computer. Don’t skip this step—even if that means you have to go round to a friend or relative’s house
